Hi John, Yes this can definitely cause some harm but it shouldn't be anything major so long as the users are truly inactive. As far as improving performance for year end there are several things you can do but you should consult with an experienced GP partner before implementing any of these. One thing I do for year end is disabling any scheduled backup tasks. We run manual backups between each step so it isn't critical to have the system backing itself up while we are running year end. I believe you can also change the recovery model of the databases from Full to Simple which should speed things up. Once again please talk to your partner before trying either of these options.
