As a side note we once had a client processing payroll every other week for 600 employees. We tried out best to convince them that GP was not the issue it was their server. Despite all the performance logs that we generated showing the server being brought to its knees they would not listen. They opted for another payroll solution on another server. Soon after that switch their employee numbers rose and the performance of that server tanked. These large imports you are doing are they done after hours or while people are doing their daily processing? I would agree that eConnect embedded in your own custom code would be a good way to go. This way you could build in data validation before the import and control what to do in the event of an error being thrown.
